First edition edition in English, first printing of one of Chagall's most desirable lithographic works, which illustrates and chronicles the creation of twelve stained glass windows, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel, designed by Chagall for the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center Synagogue in Jerusalem. With two original lithographs and thirty-six preparatory color designs, transferred to the stones under the personal direction of Chagall, gorgeously printed by Mourlot Freres in Paris. The texts by Jean Leymarie were composed by hand in "Roman du Roi" and were printed by the Imprimerie Nationale de France.

New York: George Braziller, 1962. Publisher's original red cloth, titles stamped in gilt, photo-illustrated endpapers, original lithograph frontispiece. A near fine copy in a very good, unclipped dust jacket. Binding is tight and sturdy, minimal wear to boards, clean with no markings. Dust jacket shows a touch of shelfwear with a couple closed tears, protected in archival mylar. A beautiful book.
