Suffrage Cook Book, Edited by Mrs. L.O. Kleber

First edition, first printing of this scarce cookbook used as a fundraising tool for women's suffrage, with cover art showing a calm Uncle Sam holding the sexes in balance while twelve states and Alaska granted women full or partial (Illinois) suffrage. Featuring dozens of recipes, contributed by group members and well-known literary and political figures, such as suffrage pie, angel cake and of course "Pie for a Suffragist's Doubting Husband."

"First published in 1915 by The Equal Franchise Federation Of Western Pennsylvania... The Suffrage Cook Book was assembled by a Mrs. L.O. Kleber, a little-known member of the Pittsburgh suffrage society, who contacted dozens of the leading women and men who supported the suffrage movement in the UK and US, asking for contributions in order to raise money to support the women's vote campaign. Along with Charlotte Gilman, who wrote the classic novella The Yellow Wallpaper, and The Call of the Wild author Jack London, contributors also include the suffragette Lady Constance Lytton; Jane Addams, the second woman to win a Nobel peace prize; and Julia Lathrop, the first woman to head a federal department, the US Children's Bureau" (Guardian).

Pittsburgh: Equal Franchise Federation of Western Pennsylvania, 1915. Publisher's original blue pictorial cloth stamped in black and gilt; pp. 244. A very good copy. Binding remains sturdy and square, light shelfwear to board extremities, front pastedown lifting a bit at gutter. Stamp of the Suffrage Service Hut, Pittsburgh to the flyleaf, which was a USO-type enterprise for soldiers toward the end of World War I providing entertainment and other services, along with tape remnants to pastedowns and flyleafs. Overall, a very nice copy of this scarce and important cookbook, protected in a removable archival sleeve.
