The Motorcycle Ganges, Hunter S. Thompson
[in] The Nation (May 17, 1965)
Very rare first appearance of Hunter S. Thompson's first book, Hell's Angels, in The Nation. In 1965 Thompson was hired by The Nation to write about the Hell's Angels in California. Published in May, the story was a huge sensation and led to a book deal for Thompson, who embedded himself with the notorious gang for a year. Hell's Angels was published two years later in 1967, firmly establishing Thompson as a major journalistic force and launching what would be his trademark Gonzo style.
