The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Carson McCullers
First edition, first printing in the first state dust jacket
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1940. First state jacket denoted by "Summer's Lease" on back flap and $2.50 price. A near fine or better copy in a very good, unclipped dust jacket. Binding is tight, sturdy and square. Internally clean with the endpapers restored to new. The jacket remains bright and vivid, with the slightest dulling to lettering on spine. Shelfwear present at corners and spine folds with a few minor points of loss and a chip to front crown of spine. Overall, a very presentable copy of McCullers' debut novel, published when she was just 23 years old.
