The Story of a Tattooed Girl, Miss Cindy Ray

Rare first edition of the autobiography of Miss Cindy Ray. Born in 1942 as Bev Robinson, Cindy Ray was Australia’s first homegrown tattooed pin-up girl and a prominent tattooist. In 1959 she answered a newspaper advertisement from Harry Bartram who was looking for models to shave their eyebrows. At the time, she had no interest in tattooing but Bertram convinced her to get tattooed by promising her fame and fortune, along with paying for her coverage. She soon became an icon of the early 1960s tattoo culture, with her name on books, tattoo machines and jewelry kits. By the end of her career she had become one of the most famous and influential personalities in the modern history of tattooing.

[Victoria, Australia]: Cindy Ray, [nd but circa 1966]. Original spiral comb-bound with laminated pictorial card wrappers and clear plastic covers, 109 pages plus 65 pages of images. In about very good condition. Light shelfwear, bump to top corner of front wrap with crease to plastic cover, three pages show some paper loss or detachment, small smudge to table of contents, else internally quite clean. Rare.
