The Pawnbroker, Edward Lewis Wallant
First edition, first printing, signed and dated in the year of publication by Wallant to the flyleaf. A very nice copy of Wallant's most well-known novel, a finalist for the National Book Award and basis for 1964 Oscar-nominated film of the same name directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Rod Steiger, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Juano Hernandez and Morgan Freeman in his feature film debut. Signed copies are scarce, as Wallant died a year after the novel's publication.
New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, 1961. Publisher's original grey cloth, stamped in silver and grey; pp. vi, 279. A near fine or better copy in a near fine, unclipped dust jacket. Binding remains tight, sturdy and square. Light bump to spine heel, internally clean and fine. Jacket shows minor shelfwear and rubbing, protected in archival mylar.
