Free franked address panel from Admiral of the Red and 1st Baron de Saumarez, James Saumarez, signed “De Saumarez,” London, May 22, 1834, to his brother Richard Saumarez, Esq., care of Mr. Audley, Anglesey Place, Southampton. With red circular crowned “FREE 22 MY 22 1834” datestamp and additional manuscript inscription “Admiral Lord De Saumarez G.C.B., 12 Saville Street, London” on verso.
A fine example of Lord de Saumarez’s free franking privilege as a peer and Admiral, sent to his younger brother Richard Saumarez (1764–1835), noted physician and author. James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez, was a distinguished Royal Navy officer best known for his service during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, particularly for his command in the Battle of Algeciras Bay (1801) and his success in the Baltic. He was elevated to the peerage in 1831 and held the title until his death in 1836. Attractive with clear postal markings, just two years before the Admiral’s death.
Measures approx 4.5" x 2.75". In very good condition, minor toning and wear, adhesive residue from prior mounting to verso. Protected in a removable archival sleeve.
