The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon
Rare first and early edition set of Gibbon's magnificent work of historiography, one of the most influential books of history ever published. All volumes are first editions, with the exception of volume one, which is a second edition, published just a few months after the first. Volume one has a complex bibliographic history of its own, with three separate editions being published prior to the second volume. (Norton, p. 36)
London: Printed for W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1776-1788. All half-titles present with the engraved portrait in volume one and three maps (two in vol. two, one in vol. three), as called for. Large quarto, bound in full diced calf, decorated in blind, gilt turn-ins, marbled page edges, rebacked to style with 5 raised bands, morocco title label, decorated in blind, lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Bindings are sturdy and square, general wear to original boards with scattered minor scuffs, scratches and discoloration, portions of the marbled edges faded. Quite clean internally, with a few instances of unobtrusive staining and foxing, maps complete, scattered offsetting, several endpapers renewed to style. Overall, a quite presentable copy of this landmark work.
