Captain John Smith

First American edition, complete in two volumes, of this cornerstone of American history. Smith was one of 105 emigrants who departed in December of 1606 establish the Virginia colony and led expeditions into the surrounding region in search of food. In 1607, Smith was imprisoned but later released, a development he attributed years later to the intervention of Pocahontas, an Indigenous princess. With all five engraved plates from the original first London edition, featuring three large folding engraved scenes and maps. Among the plates are: the engraved frontispiece portrait of Captain John Smith; the engraved coat of arms frontispiece for Volume II; a large folding plate illustrating numerous scenes from Smith's travels and discoveries; the folding "Old Virginia" map, which depicts the original settlement areas and includes pictorial engravings of the author's adventures, such as Pocahontas pleading with Powhatan to spare Smith's life; and the large folding general map of Virginia in its original format, showcasing regions of Virginia, Maryland, and the coastline extending to Carolina.

Richmond, VA: The Franklin Press, 1819. Contemporary mottled calf, five gilt bands to spine with morocco compartments, lettered in gilt; pp. [14], 247; xi, 282. Bindings remain firm, boards show general wear and rubbing, with corners rather worn. A few pinholes near spine heels. Contemporary owner's signature to each title page, else internally clean with scattered offsetting and foxing, typical toning, volume 2 frontispiece loosening but still secured, small closed tear to each map at the fold.
