A Monograph on the Fossil Lepadidae, or, Pedunculated Cirripedes of Great Britain

Charles Darwin

First edition of the first of Darwin’s important barnacle monographs, published alongside his monograph on living Lepadidae. This fossil monograph marked Darwin’s first major paleontological work and reflected his deepening commitment to understanding variation and classification. Though focused on a narrow group—fossil stalked barnacles of Great Britain—it exemplified the meticulous, comparative methodology that would later underpin On the Origin of Species. As part of Darwin’s broader barnacle research (1846–1854), it played a key role in shaping his evolutionary thinking.

London: Printed for the Palaeontographical Society, 1851. Bound in maroon imitation leather over flexible boards, lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers; pp. vi, 88, [10 (5 plates)], [1 ads]. Internally quite clean with minor toning and a few thumb smudges. Light shelfwear and rubbing to boards, minor bump to top corner of text block. Note that the front cover also includes the title Fossil Verrucidae, which is not included in the interior text. Both titles were presumably bound in matching bindings, with the second volume not included here.
