First edition, first printing, signed by Millar to the flyleaf. Millar's third book, one of four books written under his real name prior to adopting the pen name Ross Macdonald, and basis for the 1986 film of the same name starring Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy. Uncommon signed.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1947. Publisher's original red cloth, lettered in blue; pp. (vi), 276, [2]. A near fine copy in an about very good, unclipped dust jacket. Binding remains sturdy and square, minimal wear to boards, internally clean. Jacket is bright and vivid, showing light shelfwear and a few closed tears, partial splits along flap folds, minor dampstaining to a portion of the lower back panel and spine heel. A presentable copy, protected in archival mylar.
