Autograph Financial Document Signed by Captain Frederick Marryat
A scarce early financial document signed "F. Marryat", authorizing payment of £142.13.0, dated London, January 26, 1828. The document instructs payment to be made to “Waterloo House” or bearer — a likely reference to a prominent 19th-century London clothier or outfitter — and is addressed to Mr. Stillwell (?). Marryat’s signature appears clearly at lower right. The verso bears additional manuscript notations referencing financial entries dated 1837 and 1840, perhaps later accounting records or reused correspondence. This piece dates to a pivotal period in Marryat's life, just before he retired from the Royal Navy and began publishing his earliest literary works.
Captain Frederick Marryat (1792–1848) was a celebrated Royal Navy officer, novelist, and pioneer of the sea adventure genre. His novels — such as Mr. Midshipman Easy and The Children of the New Forest — inspired generations of maritime fiction and influenced authors like C.S. Forester and Patrick O’Brian. Marryat’s financial documents from this transitional period (naval officer to novelist) are seldom seen, and this example, with its clear signature and early date, is particularly desirable.
