Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell

First edition, first printing, signed by Mitchell to the front free endpaper. The only novel Mitchell published during her lifetime, Gone with the Wind won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and is an undisputed literary classic. Basis for the equally important 1939 film of the same name, which is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made and also received the Academy Award for Best Picture. The first printing is identified by the statement "Published May, 1936" to the copyright page, with no other printings listed. Signed copies are particularly scarce, as Mitchell stopped signing copies around six months after publication due to so many requests - ""I was forced to adopt a 'no autographing' policy and since that time I have not altered it" (Harwell, 425).

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. Publisher's original grey cloth boards, lettered in blue, lacking the dust jacket; pp. (vi), 1037. An about good copy. Binding remains sturdy and square, loss to spine tips, mostly to the crown, with light general shelfwear to boards. The upper half of the spine cloth was at one point lifting, with a closed tear along the front joint and midway through the spine, which has now been expertly re-adhered. A hint of offsetting and foxing to endpapers, else internally quite clean. Protected in a clear, archival jacket.
