First American edition, first printing. Part of a series of works by Darwin related to his theory of natural selection, the book is a study of carnivorous plants with specific attention paid to the adaptations that allow them to live in difficult conditions. It includes illustrations by Darwin himself, along with drawings by his sons George and Francis Darwin.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1875. Publisher's original cloth stamped in gilt on the spine and black on the boards, pale yellow coated endpapers, pp. [i], x, 462, [8, ads], [1]. Binding is sturdy and square, shelfwear to board extremities with some loss at spine tips. Internally clean and free of markings, endpapers a bit discolored, minor toning, a few minor nicks and chips to page edges. A handsome copy.
