Notes on the State of Virginia

with an Appendix Relative to the Murder of Logan's Family

Thomas Jefferson

First edition thus, being the first edition in which the appendix relating to the murder of Logan's family, by Captain Cresap, was announced on the title-page" (Sabin, 35905). This was the only full-length book that Jefferson published during his lifetime, offering a detailed survey of Virginia’s geography, society, economy, and government. It’s significant for revealing Jefferson’s political philosophy, scientific interests, and complex — and often controversial — views on race, liberty, and American identity. Lacking the fold out map but retaining the frontispiece and the folding table of native tribes.

Trenton: Printed for Wilson & Blackwell, 1803. Contemporary full calf, black spine label lettered and ruled in black; pp. frontispiece, [1-5], 363. Covers worn and rubbed, front board reattached with archival tape at the hinge and joint, dampstain to the gutter of the first couple pages, pages toned and foxed, contemporary penned notations to front pastedown.
