The Naval Chronology of Great Britain, James Ralfe
First edition of Ralfe's impressively detailed account of the British navy, drawing on firsthand interviews with officers and sailors as well as contemporary official naval records. Intended as a continuation of Captain Isaac Schomberg's Naval Chronology (1802) and organized chronologically by year, the work highlights key parliamentary proceedings related to naval affairs, lists the active flag officers, and provides thorough descriptions of naval battles and engagements, grouped by location. In three volumes and with hand-colored aquatint plates, including frontispieces, with the headlines and captions printed in blue, which Abbey requires for "genuine coloured copies" (Abbey Life, 342; Sabin, 67602; Tooley, 392).
