The Raven, Edgar Allan Poe
The American Review: Vol. 1, No. 2
February, 1845
Rare first printing of Poe’s The Raven, one of the most celebrated and enduring poems in American literature. Published in the February 1845 issue of The American Review under the pseudonym “Quarles,” in keeping with the magazine’s editorial policy, the poem appears on pp. 143–145. An especially appealing copy in marbled wrappers with a printed publisher’s slip tipped in. Housed in a custom black morocco-backed clamshell case, gilt-lettered and decorated with a raven device.
Although the first appearance of The Raven is somewhat of a bibliographic dispute, this issue is often considered the first appearance of the poem in print, as the February 1845 issue of The American Review—though so dated—was announced for early January publication and, unless the publication was delayed, this clearly predates the poem’s other cited debut in the New York Evening Mirror of January 29, 1845. (BAL 16147, Heartman and Canny)
New York: Wiley & Putnam, 1845. Marbled wrappers, later transitional label to front; pp. 113 - 220, publisher's printed label tipped in at front. The volume has benefited from professional conservation including stabilization of the original wrappers and the addition of a period-style transitional label to the upper cover, designed to clarify the contents while remaining sympathetic to the pamphlet’s original character. Wraps show light wear, binding sturdy and secure. Scattered foxing and toning to pages, chip to last page "#2" written in margin of first page. The pages bearing The Raven are in very nice shape with minimal foxing, remaining bright and clearly legible. Clamshell case in fine condition.
