Cup of Gold, John Steinbeck

Second edition of Steinbeck's first novel. Originally published in 1929 by Robert M. McBride, the first edition sold quite poorly. But after the success of Tortilla Flat, Covici Friede issued another edition using photo-offset plates made from the McBride first edition and added a new introduction by Lewis Gannett and a new title page. This is the second issue, without the McBride logo on page 269 and "Of Mice and Men" to the dust jacket front panel. Housed in a custom slipcase.

New York: Covici and Friede, [circa 1937]. Publisher's original blue cloth, front panel stamped in blind, gilt titles and decorations to spine; pp. viii, [2], 269. A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Binding remains sturdy and square, light shelfwear and sunning to board extremities, a bit of discoloration to boards, gilt lettering on spine a touch faded. A couple thumb smudges internally, else quite clean. Jacket shows shelfwear and rubbing with a few small closed tears, protected in archival mylar. A presentable copy housed in a custom case.
