Gods' Man, Lynd Ward
First edition, first printing of Ward's first wordless novel, featuring 139 captionless woodblock prints that tell the Faustian story of an artist who signs away his soul for a magic paintbrush. Gods' Man was also the first American wordless novel, and is considered a precursor of the graphic novel, whose development it influenced.
New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929. Publisher's original black cloth spine with black and white illustrated paper over boards; pp. [184] leaves. A very good copy. Binding sturdy, boards showing shelfwear and rubbing, mostly at the edges, stray pen mark to front cover. Owner's contemporary (1929) signature to first blank, else internally quite clean.
