First printing of this pivotal work in Hughes' corpus, being his first book of poetry in ten years and his first after moving permanently to Harlem. Hughes describes it as "A book of light verse. Afro-Americana in the blues mood. Poems syncopated and variegated in the colors of Harlem, Beale Street, West Dallas and Chicago's South Side. Blues, ballads, and reels to be read aloud, crooned, shouted, recited and sung. Some with gestures, some not – as you like. None with a far-away voice." With a frontispiece and 12 full-page drawings by E. McKnight Kauffer.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1942. Owner's inscription to flyleaf and small sticker to front pastedown, else clean and near fine. Binding is tight and sturdy. The unclipped dust jacket shows shelfwear with chipping along the top edge and light rubbing. Closed tear to front panel with a spot of abrading, protected in archival mylar. A nice copy.
