First edition, first printing of Kenneth Millar's first novel and the first in the Lew Archer series. Written under the pen name of John Macdonald, the rest of the Lew Archer books would be written as Ross Macdonald. Uncommon.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. Publisher's original brown cloth, decorated and lettered in green; pp. (vi), 245, [3]. A near fine copy in a good, unclipped dust jacket. Binding remains tight, sturdy and square, minimal shelfwear to boards, light offsetting and foxing to endpapers else internally clean with no markings. Jacket shows general shelfwear and rubbing, very faint dampstain to front panel, loss near the spine heel, closed tear near spine crown with a tape reinforcement to verso, abrasian to rear flap, spine a touch sunned. Protected in archival mylar.
