Religio Laici or a Layman's Faith. A Poem, John Dryden

First edition, second issue. Dryden wrote Religio Laici as a response to the English translation of the Histoire critique du vieux testament by French priest Father Richard Simon. Simon's book aimed to weaken the authority of Protestantism, which places greater emphasis on the Bible than on the traditions and rituals of the Catholic Church. In Religio Laici, Dryden sought to tackle the issues raised by Simon's book, as well as other religious matters of his era, including Deism. His goal was to establish the legitimacy of the Church of England's teachings.

London: Printed for Jacob Tonson at the Judge's Head in Chancer-lane, near Fleet-street, 1682. Small 4to, bound in grey paper boards; pp. [xvi], 28. Leaves cut a little close but no loss, light toning and scattered foxing, a few very minor notations in margins and on title page, one page with closed tear. Boards in fine condition.
