First edition of James Keeler's stunning photographic series of spiral nebulae, which revealed their abundance in the sky and led to the realization that they were actually external galaxies. One of the leading American astrophysicists of his time, Keeler (1857-1900) was known for his spectroscopic studies of the rings of Saturn and observations of nebulae using the 36-inch Crossley reflector at the Lick Observatory. "With that telescope, Keeler obtained the finest photographs to date of the spiral nebulae, which we know today as distant galaxies"--BEA, page 618.

Black pebbled cloth lettered in gilt; pp. 46 + 70 gravure plates after photographs by Keeler, with publisher's slip regarding plates 10 and 12 bound before frontispiece. In very good condition, with wear to extremities and joints. An important and uncommon artifact of astronomical history.
