Admiral Edward Pellew (Viscount Exmouth) – Autograph Letter on the Sensitivity of Publishing Ages and Marriages

A thoughtful and personal letter from Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth (1757–1833), British naval hero and commander of the bombardment of Algiers. Undated, one page, approx. 7" x 4.5." Written in response to a proposed biographical or genealogical entry, Pellew expresses concern about publishing the ages and marital details of women—particularly second marriages—suggesting it may be seen as improper or intrusive. In part:

“Captain Pellew having returned the enclosed… I hear it is generally objected to your publishing the ages of females, and I second in that opinion… nor do I see any utility in publishing the second marriages of mothers...”

Pellew closes by recommending the recipient omit such details and offers to write further if needed. Boldly signed at the foot: "Exmouth."

Condition: Very good. Ink is bold and legible. A few creases from mailing, small chip along left edge, old mounting adhesive to verso corner.

A rare and candid letter revealing the Admiral’s private views on discretion, family matters, and the ethics of publishing personal details—an uncommon perspective from a legendary naval figure.
