Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison
Michel Foucault
First American edition, first printing of Foucault's immensely influential analysis of the social and theoretical mechanisms behind the changes that occurred in Western penal systems during the modern age, arguing that "prison" is used by the "disciplines" – new technological powers that can also be found, according to Foucault, in places such as schools, hospitals, and military barracks.
New York: Pantheon, 1977. Publisher's original cloth boards, lettered in silver; pp. (x), 333, [1]. A very good copy in a very good, price-clipped dust jacket. Binding firm, boards a bit bowed, minimal wear to boards. Internally clean but for a couple ink stains to the illustrations, possibly from production. Jacket shows light shelfwear and rubbing with a crease to back panel, protected in archival mylar.
