I Am Lazarus, Anna Kavan
First U.K. edition, first impression of Kavan's second collection of short stories, a summation of her experiences working among invalided soldiers at a 'military neurosis centre' at the height of the London Blitz. The book consists of a series of short stories and sketches of people on the border of complete mental breakdown, depressed and on the point when to continue living is almost intolerable.
London: Jonathan Cape, 1945. A near fine copy in a good or slightly better, unclipped dust jacket. Binding is tight and sturdy. Minimal wear to boards, internally clean. Jacket shows general shelfwear with chipping to extremities, some loss at spine tips, closed tear to rear panel, rubbing to spine and a few spots of discoloration. Presents well, protected in archival mylar.
