Journey to the End of the Night, Louis-Ferdinand Céline
First American edition
First American edition, first printing of Céline's debut and undisputed masterpiece, a hyper-realistic and misanthropic semi-autobiographical novel following the protagonist Ferdinand Bardamu from the trenches of World War 1, to the African jungle, to New York and finally to Paris as a failed doctor.
Boston: Little Brown & Co., 1934. Translated by John H.P. Marks. Original black cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine, red topstain. Binding is sturdy and square, small stamp to rear endpaper, else internally clean and free of markings, light wear to board extremities. The price-clipped dust jacket shows general wear with rubbing and surface loss, a few small closed tears, tape reinforcements to verso and a very minor crease to the lower portion of the spine. A presentable copy, protected in archival mylar.
