First edition in English of this classic text in the literature of paranoia, originally published in German in 1903. Schreber, a chief judge of the Saxon Supreme Court, experienced a psychotic break, which he documented in this memoir after emerging from seven years of institutional treatment. Freud's analysis of Schreber's memoir in 1911 shaped the psychoanalytic understanding of paranoia. Canetti explored Schreber's delusional fantasies in the last two chapters of his book "Crowds and Power," linking them to the roots of modern fascism, an analysis expanded upon by Deleuze and Guattari.

London: W.M. Dawson & Sons Ltd, 1955. Translated, edited, with introduction, notes and discussion by Ida Macalpine, M.D. and Richard A. Hunter, M.D., M.R.C.P., D.P.M. Original black cloth stamped in gilt and blind; pp. [xii], 416. A couple small faint spots to text block edges, else a fine copy in a good dust jacket showing chipping at spine ends and a split along the front panel and spine joint, minor stain to bottom of front panel, lightly toned spine, reinforced with tape to verso. Internally clean with no markings. Scarce with the dust jacket, protected in archival mylar.
