Nathaniel Hawthorne Autograph Letter Signed (ALS)

Three page handwritten and signed letter from Nathaniel Hawthorne to W.C. Burnett, a London watchmaker. Written in Liverpool and dated December 8th, 1853, Hawthorne complains to Burnett about the repair of his wife's watch. In full:

"My dear Sir, Mrs. Hawthorne's watch arrived yesterday. I presume it was right, by London time, when sent to the post. When I first looked at it, at about 5 o'clock, yesterday afternoon, it was about an hour too fast, it is now more than two hours, and is still 'going ahead' with progressive velocity..." He continues, "On putting it to my ear, I can distinguish a certain irregularity of movement-a slight clacking of the machinery. I should be lothe to suggest a charge of unfaithfulness in any person employed in your establishment; but is it not possible that the watch may have been entirely neglected, during the two months since I sent it back? At all events, there is no improvement, but the contrary. What is to be done?..."

Signed at the end by Hawthorne: "Very (?) truly and respectfully, Nath Hawthorne." Below that is written "W.C. Burnet, esq./London."

3 pages on bifolium, approx. 3.5" x 5.5." Housed in a custom quarter morocco folding case. In very good condition with some toning to first page, separation along lower portion of the fold; small blank area of paper a little thinned on final page presumably from previous adhesion, mailing folds. From the collection of William A. Strutz with his small label affixed to the inside of the case.
