First edition, first printing, in the very rare dust jacket, of this blues classic on the music and legend of Lead Belly –"King of the twelve-string guitar players of the world, long-time convict in the penitentiaries of Texas and Louisiana." Lead Belly (born Huddie Ledbetter) found success in the early twentieth century with his powerful voice, extensive repertory, fancy stepping and virtuosity on guitar, mandolin, piano, accordion and harmonica. His early fame was cut short by his imprisonment for murder, and it was in Angola Penitentiary that renowned folklorist father-son duo John and Alan Lomax discovered him, recording him for the Library of Congress and securing his parole. Released from prison in 1937, Lead Belly then became Lomax's driver and assistant, who promoted his music and arranged performances along the east coast. This book contains annotated transcriptions of 48 of Lead Belly's songs and a biographical section, much of it in his own words. Increasingly scarce.

A near fine or better copy in a very good, price-intact dust jacket with the typical machine-clipped corners. Binding is tight, sturdy and square, a couple faint and minor rubs to edges of text block. Internally clean and fine with no markings. Jacket shows light shelfwear and rubbing with a few closed tears, light creasing to panels, a couple stray pen marks to back panel. Protected in archival mylar.
