First edition, first printing of Carpenter's informative, and sometimes moving, memoir of his extraordinary extended stay in the White House which culminated in his famous painting First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation of President Lincoln.

New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1866. Publisher's original green embossed cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. 359, [1], 6 ads. Binding remains tight and sturdy, minimal wear to boards, a touch of waviness to spine cloth. Scattered foxing internally, else clean. Two pages excised after the ads. A nice copy, protected in a removable archival sleeve.
