The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Dr. Seuss
First edition, first printing of Dr. Seuss' second book, in retrospect unique for being written in prose, rather than rhyming and metered verse. The first printing is particularly scarce, with this copy meeting all requisite points per Younger and Hirsch (22): correct endpaper design with the larger hats on the pastedowns, hill on the page 'Far off in the fields?' with the unbroken line and the paper boards within 3/16" of the gutter. Lacking the original dust jacket, with a facsimile first state jacket provided in archival mylar.
New York: The Vanguard Press, 1938. Binding is sturdy. Wear to board edges and corners, which have been touched-up, spine tips a bit frayed and boards rubbed. Internally, the illustrations and text remain bright, with a handful of unobtrusive smudges and spots scattered throughout.
