Zadig; or, The Book of Fate. An Oriental Mystery Translated from the French Original of Mr. Voltaire

First edition in English of Voltaire's novella of philosophical fiction, originally published in French two years earlier in 1747. The work, one of Voltaire's most celebrated after Candide, tells the story of an ancient Babylonian philosopher who seeks to discover destiny through religious and metaphysical studies. The detective work portrayed has had a lasting impact, influencing writers such as Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Emile Gaboriau and others.

London: Printed for John Brindley, Bookseller to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, in New Bond-Street, 1749. 12mo, pp. [2], xi, [1], 238; engraved frontispiece; contemporary full polished calf, gilt-lined covers, gilt-stamped spine. Binding tight and sturdy, spine may have been professionally re-adhered at points although it's difficult to tell, some general wear and rubbing to boards. Internally, contemporary ownership writing to front pastedown and first two blanks, else free of markings, scattered light foxing. Overall, a remarkably attractive copy, housed in a custom case.
