Hurra Wir Lesen! Hurra Wir Schreiben! [Hurray We Read! Hurray We Write!]
Tom Seidmann-Freud
First edition, early printing (6th-9th thousandth) of this early and important educational picture book, written and illustrated by the niece of Sigmund Freud. Rare, as most of Seidmann-Freud's books in the original German "disappeared from bookstores in about 1937 owing to the author's non-Aryan descent" (Hürlimann). Shortly before her untimely death by suicide, she wrote to the publisher giving plans for three primers, of which this is the first and is dedicated to reading and writing.
Berlin: Herbert Stuffer Verlag, 1932. Original illustrated boards; pp. (ii), 60, [4]. Complete with the original and fragile dust jacket, publisher's insert laid in. Binding remains sturdy, some tearing along the spine with the covers showing a bit of wear and rubbing. Internally, remarkably clean with none of the fields colored or written in, light toning. "Printed in Germany" stamped to the front cover. Jacket shows wear and chipping with some loss to the spine, front flap detached, scattered soiling, protected in archival mylar.
