Better Than Sex: Confession of a Political Junkie

Hunter S. Thompson

Association copy of the first edition, inscribed by Hunter S. Thompson to journalist and author Robert Draper on the front endpaper. Written from Thompson’s Owl Farm compound in Woody Creek, Colorado and dated “Owl Farm — Feb 17 ’96” along the front pastedown. The inscription reads in full:  

“Dear Robert — Remember this: Today’s Pig is Tomorrow’s Bacon. Come on up for my trial March 12 Off the Pig. Yr friend, HST/Hunter”  

A lively and characteristically irreverent inscription, addressed to a journalist closely connected with Thompson’s literary milieu. Draper first came into Thompson’s orbit while researching an unauthorized history of Rolling Stone in the late 1980s, work which ultimately became Rolling Stone Magazine: The Uncensored History. In a later signed reminiscence included with the present copy (8 pages, dated March 2020), Draper recounts his early correspondence with Thompson and his first visit to Woody Creek, where Thompson greeted him at the Woody Creek Tavern with a round of shots and a toast: “Here’s to your book.” The document provides a vivid account of Draper’s early encounters with Thompson and their subsequent friendship.

New York: Random House, 1994. Publisher's black paper-covered boards, black cloth spine, lettered in gilt; pp. xviii, 246, [6]. A very good copy in a very good, unclipped dust jacket. Binding sturdy, light shelfwear and rubbing to boards, internally clean. Jacket shows traces of shelfwear with a light crease to front panel, very minor dampstain to verso of spine heel. Protected in archival mylar with the letter from Draper laid in.
