Admiral of the Red James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez
Autograph Signature with Wax Seal
Clipped portion of a legal document signed “De Saumarez” and sealed with his personal red wax seal, measuring approximately 5" x 2.5". The text reads, “Signed and sealed by me / De Saumarez,” with a manuscript date of 4th December 1833. The red wax seal remains intact and legible, though cracked. Paper shows an original mailing fold and mild wear, including a diagonal loss to lower left corner (not affecting signature or seal). Adhesive residue to verso from previous mounting. Protected in a removable archival sleeve.
James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez, was a distinguished Royal Navy officer best known for his service during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, particularly for his command in the Battle of Algeciras Bay (1801) and his success in the Baltic. He was elevated to the peerage in 1831 and held the title until his death in 1836. Items bearing his signature and seal are increasingly scarce, especially with intact wax impressions.
