Arabic Islamic Manuscript, Anonymous. Annotated Devotional Poetry in Leather.
Arabic Devotional Manuscript, Anonymous
An extensively annotated Arabic manuscript of poetry praising the Prophet Muhammad, apparently including a takhmis, or five-part poetic expansion, of Ibn Rashid al-Baghdadi’s al-Qasa’id al-Witriyya. Large, widely spaced principal lines are accompanied by smaller interlinear and marginal notes, including grammatical explanations. A more densely written prose section is also present; its relationship to the poetry has not been established.
Place and date not established; attributed to sub-Saharan Africa, nineteenth century. Manuscript in brown and darker ink on paper, approximately 6½ × 8 inches. Unsewn loose leaves between stiff brown leather covers; uncounted, written on both sides. In good condition overall, with rubbing and surface wear to the leather, toning and occasional staining, and wear, creasing, and some chips or short tears at the leaf edges. Sequence and completeness unverified.
