William Whewell et al.

Original March 1834 issue containing the first recorded appearance in print of the word “scientist,” introduced by William Whewell in his anonymous review of Mary Somerville’s On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences. The review occupies pages 54–68, with the celebrated passage on page 59 proposing the term by analogy with “artist.” An important document in the history of scientific language, preserved in its original printed wrappers with extensive contemporary advertising matter.

London: John Murray, 1834. The Quarterly Review, Vol. LI, No. CI. Original printed drab wrappers, edges untrimmed; pp. [2], 283, [1, blank] plus extensive advertisements at front and rear. Wrappers creased and lightly soiled, with a strip lacking along the upper edge of the front wrapper, additional small edge chips and tears, and cracking and wear to the spine. Internally generally clean, with light toning, occasional spotting, and some marginal creasing.
