If You Have a Lemon, Make Lemonade: An Essential Memoir of a Lunatic Decade

Warren Hinckle

Two first editions of Hinckle's autobiography, being presentation copies inscribed by Warren Hinckle for Max and Anne Geismar. The recipient, Maxwell Geismar, was the prominent literary critic and biographer of Mark Twain; his wife Anne Geismar was herself an editor and later the author of Resilient Radical. Each copy is inscribed by Hinckle on the front endpaper, one designated “HIS” and one “HERS” beneath the jocular heading “OFFICIAL GEISMARS’ COPY: DO NOT REMOVE OR STARCH.” The inscriptions read, respectively:

“HIS / To Max: Who learned me about Henry Jones, and then almost everything else that mattered—and thus changed my life and Ramparts as it was. Much love, Warren”

“HERS / To Anne: Who I am unfortunately certain, is the only woman I really loved… [because of pink + dingle-berries + shrimp] and if it were not for that Catholic stuffiness about incest… Well… love—Warren.”

The association is a strong one. Hinckle, the legendary editor of Ramparts, later wrote that Geismar became almost instantly his “closest friend, confidant, foster father, and soul mate,” and “the most important intellectual influence on the developing Ramparts.” That connection appears to be borne out here, with the affectionate and highly personal inscriptions to a couple clearly close to Hinckle’s life and work.

New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1974. First edition. Octavo. Publisher’s original black boards, in the original dust jackets; pp. xiii, 370.  Both copies very good or better, with Max's showing a few minor stains to boards and text block, a few smudges and instances of foxing internally, clearly gently read. Anne's copy in slightly better, near fine condition. Jackets are unclipped, showing light shelfwear and scattered foxing, protected in archival mylar.
