Autograph Letter Signed (“Robt. Calder”), 2 pp. on a bifolium, “Mr. Lyall’s, Tuesday, 11 o’Clock,” n.d. (early 19th century). Addressed to William Wood, with remains of wax seal and docketing on verso. Old folds, scattered spotting and seal stains, former adhesive from mounting, one small hole from seal tear not affecting text; very good. Measures approx. 9.5" x 15" when open.
Vice-Admiral Sir Robert Calder, a senior commander of the Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, best known for the Battle of Cape Finisterre (1805), a controversial but strategically consequential engagement during the campaign that culminated in Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar. This is a detailed and unusually personal letter arranging meetings aboard the Barfleur, coordinating with officers, and preparing for a formal visit by the Duke of Gloucester.
Calder writes that he has “waited as long as I possibly can” hoping to see Wood before departing, and invites him aboard the Barfleur where Captain Dacres will attend to any necessary papers. After “our Royal visit is over,” Calder promises to accompany Wood into the Dock Yard, where he has arranged both a dinner at 3 o’Clock and a tour of the yard and associated offices.
A very good content letter involving the Barfleur, a royal visit, and administrative business with the Dock Yard—far richer than typical Calder letters, which tend toward brief notes or routine orders. Protected in a removable archival sleeve.
