Annals of the Lowell Observatory, Percival Lowell

First editions, complete in three volumes. Percival Lowell's fame and notoriety arose from his claims about the existence of intelligent life on Mars, based on what he regarded as irrefutable evidence for a network of canals on the surface of the planet visible from the Lowell Observatory. He established the Observatory expressly for Martian research but made other studies there as well. These three volumes are a result of years of observations of the planets Jupiter and Mars and the data on canals can also be found within these volumes. The contents of the Annals are as follows:

Volume I: Annals of the Lowell Observatory Volume I. Observations of the Planet Mars During the Opposition of 1894-5 Made at Flagstaff, Arizona. Cambridge: The Riverside Press, 1898. pp. xii, 391, 21 plates + text illustrations.

Volume II: Annals of the Lowell Observatory Volume II. I. Observations of the Planet Jupiter and its Satellites 1894 and 1895 II. Observations of the Planet Mars 1896 and 1897 Made at Flagstaff, Arizona, And Tacubaya, Mexico. Cambridge: The University Press, 1900. pp. xi 523p, 41 plates + text illustrations.

Volume III: Annals of the Lowell Observatory Volume III Observations of the Planet Mars During the Oppositions of 1894, 1896, 1898, and 1903 Made at Flagstaff, Arizona. NP: Percival Lowell, 1905. pp. xiv, 293 pages with additional 60-page glossy supplement containing extensive illustrations, 18 plates + text illustrations.

Volumes I and II were issued with printed paper wraps that have been bound into the later hardcover cloth covers, spines lettered in gilt. Vol III is in the original hard cover, paper-covered binding as issued. Front hinge is starting at bottom, spine is slightly sun-toned. Contents of all three volumes are bright, clean, devoid of foxing or markings. Owner's signature on the flyleaves of volume 1 and 2. Overall a very nice set, scarce.
