Antonio Cañero Autograph Letter Signed (ALS)
Handwritten and signed letter from famed Spanish bullfighter Antonio Cañero to American birth control advocate, suffragist, and film producer Juliet Barrett Rublee. Cañero was a rejoneador, a bullfighter who fights the bull on horseback, and is considered to be responsible for the resurrection of the practice. Rejoneo all but died out with the arrival of the Spanish Civil War, but later bullfighters, such as Álvaro Domecq Díez or Conchita Cintrón, would reintroduce it to the public. Cañero also appeared in several films, including La boda de Rosario (1929), Sol y sombra (1922) and La tierra de los toros (1924). During this same time, Rublee produced Flame of Mexico (released in Mexico as Alma mexicana), which provided a window on to political and cultural aspects of US-Mexican relations during the 1920s.
Letter translates as:
"Dear Madam:
I just arrived from Puebla and I received your kind invitation for yesterday. I am very sorry that I could not attend and I thank you for your attention, but since neither the cocktails nor the parties are over, another day will come.

Single sheet on a rejoneo letterhead, folded twice, measuring approx. 10 1/2" x 8." In very good condition, protected in a removable archival sleeve. Also included is the original mailing envelope, addressed in Canero's hand with his stamp to the back. Envelope in good condition with some staining. Signed material from Cañero is very scarce.
