Sonetti, Canzone e Triumphi, Petrarch. 1513 Venice, Woodcuts, Armorial Binding.
Li Sonetti, Canzone e Triumphi, Francesco Petrarca
Early illustrated Venetian edition of Petrarch's Sonetti e Canzoni and Triumphi, bringing together his celebrated lyric poetry and allegorical Triumphs with extensive Renaissance commentary. Printed in italic type, with the verse framed by commentary, and illustrated with seven full-page woodcuts within decorative borders. A handsome example of early Italian book illustration, retaining the appeal of a later gilt-armorial binding.
Venice: Bernardino Stagnino, May 1513. Two separately titled parts in one volume, small quarto. Eighteenth-century brown leather, gilt arms to both boards within gilt-rule borders, raised spine bands and gilt decoration, with green ties. ff. 158; [6], 184. A pleasing copy, generally quite clean internally, with clear woodcut impressions. Binding rubbed and scuffed, with losses at the spine ends and corners and minor splits to the front joint exposing the supports; boards remain attached. First title soiled and spotted, with old ink and pencil markings, occasional light spotting and marginal marks elsewhere, Bardon bookseller's label to front pastedown.
