Amoris Divini Emblemata, Otto van Veen. Second Edition ~ 1660.

Amoris Divini Emblemata, Otto van Veen

Second edition of Vaenius's influential devotional emblem book, illustrated with sixty engravings depicting Divine Love and the soul in richly detailed allegorical scenes. Otto van Veen, known as Vaenius, was a teacher of Peter Paul Rubens; here his designs are accompanied by devotional texts in Latin, Spanish, Dutch and French. An appealing example of seventeenth-century emblem literature from the Plantin press.

Antwerp: Ex Officina Plantiniana Balthasaris Moreti, 1660. Quarto. Vellum binding. 127, [1] pp. A pleasing copy, generally clean internally, with clear engraved impressions, penciled notations to the front pastedown, scattered foxing and a few minor stains. Vellum lightly with shelfwear. Text block cracked between gatherings, exposing the sewing; several gatherings loosened but remaining attached by the threads.
