Protesting His Post Office Dismissal, 1817
Autograph letter signed “Aug. Thesiger,” addressed to His Majesty’s Postmaster General. Bloomsbury Square, London, March 13, 1817. One page on a single sheet, docketed on the verso; approximately 7½ x 9¼ inches.
Thesiger protests his dismissal, without what he considered a fair and impartial hearing, from a Post Office position whose duties he had performed for more than thirty-four years. Declaring the decision injurious to his character, he announces his intention to appeal to His Majesty’s Government for redress. Related correspondence preserved in the British Library’s Liverpool Papers includes Thesiger’s 1817 appeal to the Treasury concerning the dismissal.
The recipient is identified only by office. Because two Joint Postmasters General served in 1817, I cannot safely assign the recipient to either individual officeholder.
Original letter folds with light toning and handling wear. Small paper loss at a fold intersection, not affecting the text; minor edge wear and a dark mark on the verso. The writing remains clear and legible.
