Erewhon, Samuel Butler

Limited Editions Club edition of Samuel Butler’s Erewhon, number 1,200 of 1,500 copies, signed by illustrator Rockwell Kent on the limitation page. First published in 1872, Butler’s satire turns Victorian conventions upside down and imagines machines evolving beyond human control. This handsome edition pairs an introduction by Aldous Huxley with Kent’s striking illustrations and chapter designs, printed in several colors, and was produced by Pynson Printers under the supervision of Elmer Adler.

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1934. Publisher’s blue and cream patterned cloth, spine lettered lengthwise, in the original labeled slipcase. A near fine copy with a firm binding and a few light spots to the fore-edge; internally clean. Slipcase worn, with splitting along the seams.
