A privately issued anthology of bawdy American vernacular verse, bringing together sailors' songs, cowboy songs, college songs, parodies, limericks, and other humorous and erotic doggerel. Published pseudonymously as the work of "A Gentleman About Town," the collection is generally attributed to publisher, editor, and literary critic Thomas Robert Smith.

One of 1,000 copies privately printed for subscribers, with the title page expressly stating that none was offered for general sale.

Later custom binding of burgundy half leather over red and pink marbled boards, green leather spine label lettered and ruled in gilt, and red endpapers; pp.iii, [1], 184. Light rubbing and a few small scuffs to the leather, with minor wear and chipping to the marbled paper at the board edges and corners. Title page evenly toned. The final word "two" on page 20 has been supplied in manuscript. A handsome presentation of an uncommon and notorious anthology.
