Japanese Double-Sided Carved Wood Printing Block

A substantial Japanese wood printing block, double-sided with Japanese characters cut in relief and reverse in numerous horizontal rows on both faces. The block measures approximately 14½ by 7 by ¾ inches, with raised transverse battens at either end. Accompanied by a later paper dealer band bearing Japanese annotations and the penciled English description “Wood Block A.D. 1850.” The publication, author, carver, and exact text remain unidentified. 

In very nice shape, showing minimal wear. No corresponding printed impression is present.

Provenance: acquired in Japan by the previous owner, a longtime bookseller, during the 1970s or 1980s and retained in his stock until recently.
