The Chronicles of Enguerrand de Monstrelet

Rare large paper issues with hand-colored plates of the first Thomas Johnes translations of Froissart and Monstrelet's Chronicles. One of just 25 sets issued in the large paper format and purportedly one of six such sets featuring the hand-colored plates. This was the first English translation of Froissart since the 1523-25 version by Lord Berners and was the first dated production of the Hafod Press established by Johnes on his estate in Cardiganshire, Wales. Complete in 8 volumes.

[Hafod]: Hafod Press, 1803-1805; 1809. Folio, each volume approx. 15.5" x 10". Contemporary dark straight grain morocco, lined in gilt and tooled in blind, 12 raised bands to spines with gilt lettering and decorations, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Froissart with 112 engraved plates, 56 magnificently hand-colored, and 2 hand-colored engraved maps. Monstrelet with 51 hand-colored plates, one double page, illuminated in gold and silver in the missal style. All plates faithfully copied from the originals preserved in the British Museum and other collections. Complete in 8 volumes with the fifth (supplementary) Froissart volume bound in at the end of the fourth volume.

Overall very good condition. Bindings remain tight, sturdy and square. General shelfwear and rubbing to boards and extremities, corners worn and moderately frayed. A few scratches, abrasions and divots to boards with a couple minor stains. Minor instances of discoloration to top gilt edge. Several contemporary bookplates to end pastedowns and endpapers, scattered light foxing, toning and offsetting, else internally quite clean. A nice set, rare with the hand-colored plates.
