First trade edition of Melville's classic novel with Rockwell Kent's striking artistic interpretation. One of the most iconic illustrated books of the twentieth century, Kent's background as a draughtsman and his love of maritime travel and adventure made him particularly well suited to take on the illustrations.   

New York: Random House, 1930. Original black boards with silver-stamped titles and design; pp. xxxii, 822, [6]. A near fine copy in a poor to fair dust jacket, lacking the front flap. Binding remains sturdy and square, minimal wear and rubbing to boards, uncommonly bright. Owner's bookplate to verso of second blank, else internally clean. Jacket is missing the front flap, worn with instances of loss, faint creasing, loss along the folds. Despite flaws, it presents well in archival mylar.
